BarCamp Baltics 2009

Charles McCathieNevile started from Opera’s history. Launched by two guys in 1994, today Opera become one of trendsetters in the world of Browsers.

Mobile web 1- Wap

everybody tried to make web “walk on” mobile, but actually it was special web for mobile - sometimes good, sometimes crappy.. but actually not the same like big Web.

Mobile Web1 - iMode?

Launched i Japan, half of Japanese’s customers used it. The used revenue-share model - webmaster received money from operator when people used such special websites. BUT - customers was limited in their actions, operator launched different hubs and customers could only choose between this hubs and special websites.

Mobile Market

Japan - operator control everything, include launching of new mobile-models.

Europe - more user power. Companies are also powerful (T-mobile, Vodafone), some small - are less

“The iPhone-effect”

-the secret of Apple : it’s expensive, but it is JUST WORKS. + Great Apple marketing
+ the Android effect

What people want

the most important still = Social networking + Mail, Search, Dating

Widgets and Apps

- faster
- more officially

Widgets and standards

Opera platform

- “location by” services
- “access” to your kids
- direct connect to MMS, camera & Internet
- webapps as your front screen
- to launch services “on border”: open for developers & companies

Supercharging the browser

- everybody is going to speed

Opera Mini
- which devices?

-> they use it on PC(!)

So, people use mobile browser …on Desktop!

Facebook, Google

Size Matters

-Mobile is pretty useful, pretty private, dynamic
- now mobile is more for entertainment, but there are thousands of solutions to use it more for research, work
- but desktops still is more comfortable - for writing, for work, for research and mobile - is still just entertainment
- but mobile will be more and more used - for services, for communication, and desktops like other applications will be more and and more destroy and loose market-share the same like TV loose the share comparing with Internet. And the same situation will be with desktop and mobile browsers.

How Opera make money?

- customized “private label” versions of Mini (Vodafone Mini browser)
- revenue-share with SE (Yandex, Google, etc.)
- selling places in bookmarks
